Who We Are

KRANTI SETALVAD
(1930-2020)

Late Mrs. Kranti Jagdish Setalvad is the granddaughter of freedom fighter Dr Hariprasad Desai, daughter of freedom fighter Nirmala Desai, grandniece of freedom fighter Pritamrai Desai and first Attorney General of Independent India M. C. Setalvad and wife of freedom fighter Jagdish Setalvad.

Kranti Setalvad was originally named Rashmi Desai when she was born in Sabarmati Jail where her mother was imprisoned in August 1930, but Mahatma Gandhi who was in the Aga Khan palace in Pune at the time, sent across a message that the girl be named Kranti (revolution).

Born in Gujarat and bred in Mumbai, Kranti had passionately taken part in the Independence movement as a part of the “Vanar Sena” —a children’s brigade that participated in the freedom movement.

Food and philanthropy have always featured in Kranti’s life, all the way from her childhood when she would visit Bapu’s ashram in Wardha, she found the food there rather bland so she would hide packets of chana and sing under the carpet of her residence at the ashram to watching many of her adults in her family survive on only bhakri in jail when there was very little money at home.

Many who knew her, would vouch for her generosity when it came to help the underprivileged. She worked actively with Mani Bahvan (Mumbai).

Thus, Kranti saw in her daughter, Ms. Naini Setalvad, the passion to bring about nutritional awareness across the country and with the freedom fighter blood running in her veins, she decided to set up the Health For You Foundation with the mission to fight poor nutrition and to inculcate among people a sense of social responsibility for nutritional eating for all.
